Library procedure

To borrow and then return a Library Reader, students follow the same procedure as for any other school library book:

  1. obtain the grader reader you want -- 2-book, 2-week limit -- from the specially marked ER area in the school library
  2. write your name and homeroom on the book's pocket-card
  3. write the book's title, index number and sign-out date on your library card (kojin-kiroku-kado). Assigned to students during the April library-orientation lesson that is part of Japanese class (kokugo) , library cards are kept in an index-box in the library (rather than carried personally), come in 3 colours (JHS1/SHS1-green, JHS2/SHS2-yellow, JHS3/SHS3-grey), and bear the student's name and homeroom as well as information about library-hours and borrowing regulations
  4. hand the book's pocket-card and your library card to the librarian, who stamps both cards with the sign-out date, files away the pocket-card, and returns the student her card for her to file back into the index-drawer
  5. once done reading a book, the student again retrieves her card and hands it and the book to the librarian, who stamps a return-date on the student's card and the book's pocket-card

Reshelving the graded-readers as well as preparing them -- besides a pocket-card, each book also needs a Quick Book Review sheet, a colored-index label and spine-protective tape -- is the task of the librarian and the school's library club (many thanks for all their help!!). The library staff also keep tallies in the Library Register as to which titles are borrowed and by whom, which information they in turn use for monthly top-10 lists, published in the form of classroom newsletters and posters, about what books are popular and who's reading the most.

TEREP's indexing system, however, does differ from usual library procedure. On the back of each book, tape or CD-ROM you'll find:
