Starter Cards

Anyone is welcome to use the Starter Cards, but, if you think you're weak in reading and even the lowest level graded readers scare you, then these 40 cards are perfect for you. They show that reading can be easy and fun, while at the same time introducing most of the vocabulary in Pink and Green level readers.

The cards come in four sets of 10 cards each. The 1st set of cards is the easiest, the 4th the hardest. Each card is short - only 2 sides of A4 - with instructions given in Japanese. A title at the top of each card shows the topic covered by both sides of the card, while the number in the top-right corner indicates the set and card number. For example, the card Family 1.3 is the 3rd card in the 1st set, and card How much? 3.8 is the 8th card in the 3rd set.

Each card concentrates on one field of vocabulary . For example, cards 1.4 2.4 3.4 and 4.4 are about movement. Nine important vocabulary fields are covered:

1A/1B. being 4. movement 7. time
2.form 5. feeling

8. quantity and number

3. relationships 6. communication 9. change

You may start the cards from any set you like, but finish one set of 10 before going to the next. To do a card:

1. Take a card from the Starter Card box kept in the library;

2. Read the card;

3. Write your answers on the card itself;

4. Check your answers by asking an English teacher in the JHS staff room for the answer-book;

5. Paste the card into your Extensive Reading notebook.

Just like the graded readers, you count the card your read on your MY READING print. Cards from the 1st set count as a Pink level and cards from the 2nd, 3rd or 4th sets count as a Green level. Note that both sides of the reading card together count as one page, not two. And finally, though a MY BOOK REPORT is of course unnecessary, if there's a card you really like-or really hate-then, go ahead and write a report!
